Taste & Character

Crisp Best Ale Malt is crafted from 2-row winter barley grown in the light, sandy soils of North Norfolk, UK. This heritage base malt delivers a rich golden color (2.5–3.5°L) and a balanced sweet, malty flavor with subtle biscuit-like undertones. Thanks to high cast moistures and carefully managed germination times and temperatures, the result is an even, well-modified malt with excellent consistency. With a maximum moisture content of 3.5% and an extract fine grind minimum of 82.0%, it provides both flavor and brewhouse efficiency.

Where It Shines

Designed with ale brewing in mind, Crisp Best Ale Malt is particularly well-suited for traditional British styles such as session bitters, amber ales, best bitters, and dark milds. Its robust malt backbone balances hop bitterness, producing well-rounded, flavorful beers that showcase authentic English character.

Role in the Brewhouse

This versatile base malt offers excellent extract potential and balanced enzymatic activity, allowing it to be used as up to 100% of the grist. Its enzyme strength also supports adjunct use, giving brewers flexibility in recipe design while ensuring dependable conversion.

Brewer’s Guidance

Use Crisp Best Ale Malt as the sole base for traditional English ales or combine with crystal and roasted malts to add layers of complexity. Its reliable performance, rich flavor, and warm golden hue make it a go-to choice for any brewer seeking to craft classic ale styles with authenticity.
