Briess Blackprinz® Malt is made from hull-less barley grown in North America, and delivers deep, rich brown-to-black color with a smooth, clean roasted flavor. Unlike traditional black malts, it brings richness without bitterness, astringency, or dryness—resulting in a beautifully delicate roasted profile.

Where It Shines

Ideal for adding dark color with subtle roast notes, Blackprinz® Malt excels in styles like Black IPAs, Black Lagers, Schwarzbiers, and other dark beers—or as a color accent in lighter styles with minimal flavor impact.

Role in the Brewhouse

This malt functions as a specialty roasted adjunct, offering color depth and gentle roast complexity without the harshness often associated with high-heat kilned malts—thanks to its hull-less barley source that avoids husk-derived bitterness.

Brewer’s Guidance

Use at 1–2% for color adjustment in pale beers, 2–5% for noticeable darkening with smooth roast flavor, and 5–10% when you want deeper color along with mild roasted malt character. Always add incrementally, as its deep hue can dominate quickly.
