Taste & Character

Simpsons Golden Naked Oats™ are a unique huskless oat malt that contribute a smooth, creamy mouthfeel and a warm golden hue. With a color range of 5.0–10.0 Lovibond, they provide subtle notes of biscuit and nuts while enhancing body, head retention, and overall drinking experience.

Where It Shines

This malt is particularly popular in New England IPAs, Stouts, and Porters, where it elevates texture and delivers a velvety finish. It also performs well in a wide variety of styles that benefit from added creaminess and malt complexity.

Role in the Brewhouse

Golden Naked Oats™ enhance mouthfeel and foam stability while contributing subtle malt sweetness and nutty undertones. Their unique huskless nature reduces astringency, making them especially effective for achieving smooth and balanced beers.

Brewer’s Guidance

Use Golden Naked Oats™ at 5–15% of the grist to add body and creaminess, or in smaller amounts to provide nuanced flavor and improved foam stability. They pair well with hop-forward styles as well as malt-driven recipes, making them a versatile tool for brewers.

Brewer’s Usage

Simpsons Golden Naked Oats™ should be milled before use to expose the endosperm for proper starch conversion during mashing. As a huskless grain, they are softer than barley malt, so adjust the mill gap slightly tighter while avoiding over-crushing into flour. Because they lack husk material, consider adding rice hulls to improve lautering when using higher percentages. Typical usage rates are 5–15% of the grist for silky mouthfeel and nutty sweetness, though some brewers push inclusion higher in styles like NEIPAs to enhance body and haze stability.
