Accurate Gravity Readings for Better Fermentation

Monitor fermentation with this Triple Scale Beer and Wine Hydrometer. This compact 9-inch glass hydrometer provides specific gravity, Brix, and potential alcohol readings in a single easy-to-use instrument. Use it to measure starting gravity, track fermentation progress, determine when fermentation is complete, and estimate alcohol content.

The hydrometer is suitable for beer, wine, cider, mead, and other fermented beverages. Its three printed scales make it easy to select the measurement commonly used for your recipe or fermentation process.

Three Measurement Scales

  • Specific Gravity: 0.982 – 1.160 for measuring liquid density, original gravity, final gravity, and fermentation progress.
  • Potential Alcohol: 0% – 20% for estimating the possible alcohol content based on available fermentable sugar.
  • Brix: -4 – 35 for measuring sugar concentration in wort, must, juice, cider, and other fermentation samples.
  • Measure original gravity before fermentation begins
  • Measure final gravity before packaging
  • Monitor fermentation progress
  • Confirm that gravity readings have stabilized
  • Estimate alcohol by volume from original and final gravity
  • Measure sugar concentration in beer, wine, cider, and mead

How to Use

  1. Clean and sanitize the hydrometer, test jar, and all equipment that will contact the sample.
  2. Fill a hydrometer test jar with enough wort, must, or fermented beverage to allow the hydrometer to float freely.
  3. Gently lower the hydrometer into the sample.
  4. Give the hydrometer a light spin to release bubbles that may cling to the glass and affect the reading.
  5. Allow the hydrometer to stop moving without touching the sides or bottom of the test jar.
  6. Read the selected scale at eye level from the bottom of the liquid meniscus.
  7. Record the result in your brewing or winemaking notes.

Temperature Calibration

This hydrometer is calibrated for accurate readings at 68°F. Samples measured above or below 68°F may require a temperature correction. For the most consistent results, cool the sample close to the calibration temperature before taking a reading.

Estimating Alcohol by Volume

Record the original gravity before fermentation and the final gravity after fermentation. Use the following formula to estimate alcohol by volume:

ABV (%) = (Original Gravity – Final Gravity) x 131

For example, an original gravity of 1.060 and a final gravity of 1.012 produce an estimated alcohol content of approximately 6.3% ABV.
