Taste & Character

Briess Pilsen Malt is a classic American Pilsen-style base malt made from premium U.S. 2-row barley, offering a very light color (≈1.2°L), with a clean, sweet, delicately malty flavor.

Where It Shines

A superb base malt for lagers and any brew where you want exceptionally light color and a crisp, clean profile—yet flexible enough to use in pale ales and IPAs when a subtle malt backbone is preferred.

Role in the Brewhouse

A high-diastatic-strength base malt (≈170 Lintner) with excellent enzymatic power (~81% extract), it offers mash conversion and support when used at up to 100% of the grist—while staying exceptionally light in color.

Brewer’s Guidance

Use as 100% base malt in lagers or delicate styles for the lightest, cleanest wort. Try in pale ales or IPAs to keep malt character subdued while retaining full mash efficiency. Decoction mashing works particularly well with this slightly under-modified grain.
